Kelly Statement on Dobbs Ruling Second Anniversary

Arizona Senator Mark Kelly released the following statement on the second anniversary of the Supreme Court’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturned Roe v. Wade

“Two years ago, the Supreme Court’s disastrous decision to overturn Roe v. Wade took reproductive rights in our country decades backward, creating significant barriers for women to access safe and legal abortion services. It immediately threw our state into a whiplash between two abortion bans, leading to chaos and uncertainty for Arizona women and health care providers. And without the protections of Roe, there are now real threats to contraception, IVF fertility services, and even emergency abortion medical care.

“I remain committed as ever to restoring the rights of women, not politicians, to make their own decisions about when and how to start a family.”

Background:

Last week, Kelly and his wife, former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, published a personal essay sharing their experience with in vitro fertilization (IVF) and voicing concerns about the increasing threats to reproductive rights.

Kelly is a co-sponsor of the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would write almost 50 years of precedent for abortion protections under Roe v. Wade into law, and joined a brief in support of upholding the Food and Drug Administration’s longstanding authority to approve and regulate mifepristone—an abortion and miscarriage management medication that has been used safely and effectively for over 20 years. Kelly also helped introduce legislation to provide a consistent and strong source of funding for the Title X Family Planning Program.
