Kelly, Sinema Announce Over $75 Million Investment Coming from Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to Tucson International, Mesa Gateway, & Laughlin/Bullhead International Airports

Bipartisan Infrastructure Law shaped by Kelly and Sinema provides critical funding through the Airport Improvement Program

Arizona Senators Mark Kelly and Kyrsten Sinema announced that $75,947,944 will be invested in airport infrastructure projects at Tucson International Airport, Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, and Laughlin/Bullhead International Airport, provided by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law shaped by Kelly and Sinema. 

The Airport Improvement Program—reauthorized and expanded by Kelly and Sinema’s bipartisan infrastructure law to fund airport infrastructure projects awarded grants of $55,067,960 to Tucson International Airport, $17,900,000 to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, and $2,979,984 to Laughlin/Bullhead International Airport.  

“As hubs for tourism and commerce, Arizona’s airports play a central role in growing our economy,” said Kelly. “These investments will increase passenger safety, ensure our airports can continue to operate at full capacity, and create good paying jobs for Arizonans in the process.”

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law includes a historic $25 billion in additional investments for aviation infrastructure. The bipartisan law provides $15 billion in priority projects at every airport in the United States, $5 billion in competitive grants for terminal development and other landslide projects, and $5 billion in grants for strengthening Air Traffic Control towers and infrastructure. 

Kelly and Sinema took part in negotiations with Republican Senator Rob Portman of Ohio and senators from both parties. 

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law was supported by groups including The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Business Roundtable, The National Association of Manufacturers, The AFL-CIO, The National Retail Federation, The Bipartisan Policy Center, North America’s Building Trades Unions, the Outdoor Industry Association, The American Hotel and Lodging Association, The National Education Association, as well as hundreds of mayors across all 50 states. 

Project Amount  Project Description 
Tucson Airport Authority $55,067,960 This grant funds phase 13, which consists of clearing, grubbing and filling placement from station 590+00 to station 620+00. This project shifts existing paved Runway 11R/29L by 800 feet to bring the airport into conformity with current standards. 
Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority $17,900,000 This grant funds the remaining eligible portion of the project. This grant funds a portion of phase 1, which consists of reconstruction of 2,955 feet. This project reconstructs 6,600 feet of existing concrete Runway 12R/30L that has reached the end of its useful life. 
Laughlin/Bullhead International $2,979,984 This project rehabilitates 440 feet of the existing paved Taxiway A2 to maintain the structural integrity of the pavement to extend its useful life. This project rehabilitates 3,735 feet of the existing paved Taxiway A to maintain the structural integrity of the pavement to extend its useful life. This grant funds a portion of the total project.
