Kelly, Sinema Announce $50 Million Grant for Tucson to Strengthen Safe, Affordable Housing Options
Choice Neighborhoods Implementation Grants invest in the revitalization and rehabilitation of neighborhoods in poverty
Arizona Senators Mark Kelly and Kyrsten Sinema today announced a $50 million grant awarded to the City of Tucson to invest in the revitalization of neighborhoods in poverty – expanding everyday Arizonans’ access to safe, affordable housing options in Pima County.
The $50 million dollar grant – awarded through the Choice Neighborhoods Implementation Grant Awards – will address housing needs of both public and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) assisted housing.
“Far too many of my fellow Tucsonans lack access to the safe and affordable housing they need. This funding will spur investment and improve quality of life for hardworking families living in our most underserved neighborhoods,” said Senator Kelly.
“Arizonans deserve a safe, accessible, and affordable place to call home. Today’s funds will help transform neighborhoods across Tucson into communities where everyday Arizonans can thrive and build better lives for their families and futures,” said Sinema, a member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee.
“This $50 million dollar grant leverages the power of housing and community investment to transform the lives of Tucsonans,” said Tucson Mayor Regina Romero. “I am thankful for the support of Senators Sinema and Kelly. This transformative grant will help us fully rehabilitate the Tucson House, create additional affordable housing, and bring the types of layered investments that have long-term benefits to the businesses and neighbors in the Thrive in the 05 area. This is a huge win for ALL of Tucson and the result of strong collaboration necessary to bring federal dollars home.”
Choice Neighborhoods Implementation Grants fund the transformation, rehabilitation, and replacement housing needs of both public and HUD-assisted housing to transform neighborhoods of poverty into functioning, sustainable, mixed-income neighborhoods with appropriate services, schools, public assets, transportation, and access to careers.
The $50 million grant is the latest result Kelly and Sinema have delivered making housing safer and more affordable across Arizona. In May, the Arizona senators announced that $6,176,374 is coming to Arizona through the Housing and Urban Development Department’s Housing Trust Fund (HTF) to strengthen affordable housing options for low-income Arizonans.
