Kelly, Gallego Announce $15 Million Grant to Expand Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure in Phoenix
$15 Million from Kelly’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Will Add 150 EV Charging Ports Across Phoenix, Including Solar-Powered Stations
Today, Arizona Senators Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego and Representatives Greg Stanton (D-AZ-4) and Yassamin Ansari (D-AZ-3) announced that the City of Phoenix will receive a $15,000,000 award from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to expand Phoenix’s electric vehicle (EV) charging network, improving access for Phoenix residents and helping to address air quality challenges in Maricopa County.
The grant, awarded through the Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Discretionary Grant Program—a program established through Kelly’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law—will support the installation of 150 publicly accessible EV charging ports across Phoenix, including 26 multi-modal charging ports. The project also includes 10 portable solar-powered charging stations and solar-covered parking structures at city-owned multi-family housing sites.
“This investment will create good-paying jobs, and help Phoenix improve regional air quality, while making electric vehicles a more affordable and viable option for Arizona families and businesses,” said Kelly. “The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law continues to deliver critical resources that strengthen our economy and build a more sustainable future for our state.”
“Once again, our Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is delivering for Arizona,” said Gallego. “Arizona is already a leader in clean energy production and electric vehicle manufacturing and today’s funding announcement will allow us to continue to grow these industries while helping Arizonans get where they need to go.”
“Arizona’s EV sales have skyrocketed since Congress passed our Inflation Reduction Act. It’s essential that our EV charging infrastructure keeps up with Arizonans’ growing demand for clean, reliable transportation,” said Stanton. “This latest round of funding under our Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will bring new EV charging stations to Ahwatukee Foothills and all of Phoenix.”
“From hotter and hotter summers to drought and wildfires, Phoenix families feel the effects of climate change every day—this new funding will invest in our city’s electric charging infrastructure, help modernize our grid and start the green transition for our state,” said Ansari. “Proud to have worked on this issue as a City Councilwoman and as Vice Mayor, and now to bring things across the finish line as a Congresswoman!”
“I am grateful to the Biden administration and our Congressional leaders for helping secure this transformative award that will make Phoenix an even better place to live, work, and visit,” said Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. “As we build a more sustainable and interconnected city, new electric charging capabilities will go a long way toward reducing our emissions from transportation and improving air quality. I’m excited to get to work implementing this grant that will benefit the residents of Phoenix for decades to come.”
This funding will strengthen Phoenix’s EV charging network, helping the city achieve its goal of accommodating 280,000 electric vehicles by 2030. The initiative prioritizes equity by expanding charging infrastructure in underserved communities and reducing barriers to clean energy adoption.
The Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Discretionary Grant Program, funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, supports projects that create good-paying jobs, reduce emissions, and expand access to clean energy transportation. Senator Kelly helped shape the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to include significant investments in EV infrastructure, ensuring Arizona has the resources needed to build a stronger, more sustainable future and improve quality of life for communities across the state.
