Kelly Backs Efforts to Cut Taxes for Parents, Working Americans
Senators Mark Kelly (D-AZ), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), Michael Bennet (D-CO), and 43 of their Senate colleagues introduced the American Family Act and the Tax Cut for Workers Act to give millions of working Americans a much-needed tax break and permanently expand the Child Tax Credit. Together, these bills would lower costs and deliver relief to working families—in contrast to the Trump and Republican plan to hand out more tax breaks to billionaires and large corporations.
“Raising a family is more expensive than ever, and Arizona parents are feeling the pressure of high prices for everything from childcare to groceries. But right now, President Trump wants to sign another tax giveaway for billionaires and large corporations,” said Kelly. “Instead of more handouts for the rich, we should be cutting taxes for working families so they can get ahead.”
“With costs skyrocketing right now thanks to the Trump administration, millions of hardworking Americans need expanded tax relief to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table for their families,” said Cortez Masto. “This bill is focused on those who really need a tax cut – middle-class Americans who contribute to our economy – not Donald Trump’s billionaire friends.”
“Working people need relief more than ever. The Trump Administration’s reckless tariff policy will cost the average American family upwards of $3,800 annually,” said Bennet. “These tariffs, coupled with an extension of Trump’s tax cuts for his billionaire friends, are an insult to hard working Americans. Senator Cortez Masto and I are committed to passing real tax relief for middle-class families through the Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit.”
Specifically, the American Family Act and the Tax Cut for Workers Act would:
- Expand the Child Tax Credit (CTC) to support families with children:
- Increases the credit amount from $2,000 per child to:
- $6,360 for newborns,
- $4,320 for children ages 1–6, and
- $3,600 for children ages 6–17.
- End the discriminatory phase-out for low-income families, ensuring that the families of 17 million children currently left out of the full credit receive the same benefit as middle-class families.
- Delivering the credit monthly so parents can better keep up with bills as they arise.
- Indexing the CTC to inflation to preserve its value over time.
- Expand the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)—the Worker Tax Cut—for childless workers, who currently receive far less than parents:
- Nearly triple the average tax break for many workers without children,
- Extend eligibility to younger workers under 25 and older workers over 64, and
- Benefit nearly 300,000 Arizonans who stand to gain from this expanded tax relief.
These bills are also cosponsored by Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ), Raphael Warnock (D-GA), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Ron Wyden (D-OR) Angela Alsobrooks (D-MD), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE), Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Chris Coons (D-DE), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), John Fetterman (D-PA), Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Martin Heinrich (D-NM), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Tim Kaine (D-VA), Andy Kim (D-NJ), Angus King (I-ME), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), Ed Markey (D-MA), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Chris Murphy (D-CT), Patty Murray (D-WA), Alex Padilla (D-CA), Gary Peters (D-MI), Jack Reed (D-RI), Jacky Rosen (D-NV), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Brian Schatz (D-HI), Adam Schiff (D-CA), Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), Tina Smith (D-MN), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Mark Warner (D-VA), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Peter Welch (D-VT), and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI).
