Kelly, Gallego, Ansari Announce $84.3 Million to Expand Capacity at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport
Today, Arizona Senators Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego and Representative Yassamin Ansari (D-AZ-3) announced that $84,313,381 will be invested in infrastructure projects at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport through the Airport Improvement Program, reauthorized and expanded by Kelly’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. This funding will support the construction of a new 2,100-foot taxiway bridge to accommodate increased aircraft operations, reduce delays, and improve airport efficiency.
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport serves over 38 million passengers annually and is a central hub for commerce and tourism in Arizona. The Taxiway U project will enhance the airport’s ability to safely and efficiently handle increased air traffic, benefiting passengers, airlines, and businesses throughout the state.
“Phoenix Sky Harbor is a critical gateway, connecting Arizona to the world,” said Kelly. “This funding will expand the airport’s capacity, reduce delays, and ensure safe and efficient operations for travelers and businesses, all while supporting good-paying jobs and strengthening our economy.”
“Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that I helped pass, Phoenix Sky Harbor will be able to stay ahead of growing demand and ensure more travelers can experience America’s friendliest airport while bringing business and tourism to Arizona,” said Gallego.
“Phoenix is the fastest growing city in the country – our airport needs to be able to keep up with demand,” said Ansari. “This investment is a significant step forward for the future of Sky Harbor, a gem in Arizona’s 3rd Congressional District. In Congress, I’m dedicated to securing resources that improve our infrastructure, create good-paying jobs, and ensure a more sustainable future for our District. Looking forward to working alongside our Senators and City partners to do just that!”
“As America’s friendliest and number one ranked airport continues to grow and connect residents and visitors to worldwide destinations, investments to improve aviation infrastructure are more important than ever. This grant will enable us to complete construction on a new taxiway at Sky Harbor, which will help us achieve even faster connection times, fewer delays, and a more seamless travel experience for everyone flying through the Valley. We are immensely grateful to Senator Kelly and the Arizona delegation for passing the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that is transforming and modernizing Phoenix, and we look forward to the positive impact this project will have for decades to come,” said Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego.
The Airport Improvement Program (AIP), administered by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and funded under Kelly’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, provides essential funding to improve safety, expand capacity, and enhance efficiency at public-use airports nationwide. This program addresses growing air traffic demands, supports infrastructure modernization, and ensures long-term sustainability for airports and the communities they serve.
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law includes a historic $25 billion investment in aviation infrastructure. This funding provides $15 billion for priority projects at airports across the United States, $5 billion for competitive grants for terminal development and other landside projects, and $5 billion for strengthening Air Traffic Control towers and infrastructure.
