ICYMI: Kelly Joins “GZERO WORLD with Ian Bremmer” on PBS to Talk Space Policy, Global Security

In case you missed it, Senator and former NASA Astronaut Mark Kelly  joined Ian Bremmer on a special episode of GZERO WORLD “The New Space Race” on PBS to discuss the evolving dynamics of space policy—addressing critical questions such as competition with China, the potential militarization of the moon by Russia, and the urgent need to strengthen the space technology sector for global security.

“We’re way ahead of China in any space endeavor—we need to make sure we stay ahead,” said Kelly. “One of my goals, sitting on the Armed Services Committee and the Intelligence Committee, is to make sure that we don’t get into conflict with China. We don’t want that; I don’t think they want it […] the best way for us to stay out of that kind of conflict is to make sure that the Chinese realize that they’re not going to win.”

Kelly also highlighted the evolving role of private companies like SpaceX in shaping US space policy and how commercial partnerships have lowered the costs of space exploration and created new strategic possibilities for the United States and its allies.

As a former NASA astronaut and Space Shuttle commander—having flown four space missions and spent over 50 days in space—Kelly continues to be a champion for advancing U.S. space capabilities. During his time in the Senate, he has introduced key legislation, such as the SOAR Act and the LAUNCH Act, aimed at ensuring the U.S. stays ahead of adversaries like China and Russia. Through his efforts, Kelly remains committed to bolstering American innovation, strengthening national security, and maintaining the country’s leadership in space exploration.
