Kelly, Sinema Announce Over $6 Million for Affordable Housing in Arizona 

Funding will produce and preserve affordable housing options for low-income Arizonans 

Arizona Senators Mark Kelly and Kyrsten Sinema announced that $6,176,374 is coming to Arizona through the Housing and Urban Development Department’s Housing Trust Fund (HTF) to strengthen affordable housing options for low-income Arizonans.  

“To tackle Arizona’s housing crisis, we must increase the supply of affordable housing. This funding will help lower the cost of housing for hardworking families who have been pushed out of the unaffordable housing market as a result of Arizona’s housing shortage, said Senator Kelly.    

“Arizona’s housing shortage has made renting and owning a home unaffordable for too many hardworking families. Today’s funding will expand affordable housing options throughout our state and ensure Arizonans have a safe place to call home,” said Sinema.   

According to a December report from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, homelessness in Arizona rose by a staggering 23% from 2020 to 2022. At the same time, the median price of homes in Phoenix rose by more than $100,000 between January 2021 and July 2022 – illustrating the severity of the homelessness crisis and affordable housing shortage.  

In March, Kelly and Sinema spoke with Arizona mayors, local leaders, and HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge about solutions to the affordable housing shortage across the state. Both Senators discussed the need to construct more affordable housing units to give families certainty and peace of mind.  

Last year, Kelly and Sinema announced a major $134.6 million in housing grants for tribal communities across Arizona.   

The Housing Trust Fund (HTF) provides grants to states to produce and preserve affordable housing for extremely low- and very low-income households.
